“Restructuring Sovereign Debt: Lessons From The Past, Reforms For The Future”

The recent surge in debt restructuring, both within the Common Framework and outside of it, has proven to be slow and unsatisfactory for both debtors and creditors. This may explain why other nations are reluctant to pursue debt treatment and instead opt for costly refinancing options. How can we enhance the existing system? What role do various stakeholders play, and how can we clarify the rules? Could new provisions complicate restructuring further? This session will provide a chance to engage with both current and former practitioners and academics about the future of debt treatment.
